MAID ABUSER JAILED FOR ONE YEAR

SINGAPORE - A maid abuser was jailed yesterday, after his wife had turned him in to the authorities.
In the Subordinate Courts, Chua Tian Hoe, 64, was jailed 12 months for commiting criminal intimidation.
The court heard that in December last year, Chua became angry after his Indonesian helper Atin Supriatin did not respond to his question and punched her in the right eye.
She retaliated by spitting at Chua, who then took a chopper with a blade measuring 19 cm long and pushed her onto the floor, threatening to kill her.
He also pushed his wife away when she tried to stop him.
Ms Atin tried covering her head but Chua used the blunt edge of the chopper to knock her head several times.
She finally managed to escape to the bedroom and locked herself in it.
However, Chua put down the chopper and started using a hammer to bang on the door. He was still at it when police officers arrived after his wife had called the authorities. For committing criminal intimidation, he could have been jailed up to two years and fined. The jail term can be extend up to 10 years for more serious cases.
